At Lithgow PCYC we have two types of self-defence classes. The first is a form of Karate called Chito-Ryo and the other is Taekwondo. Both classes are under the expertise of highly-trained and well known instructors. Below is a brief explanation of both with photos of their classes and competitions. If you are interested in finding out more about either or would like to join one or both of them, please email us or contact the instructors directly.

Using the age-old philosophy of 'case by case', Chito-Ryu teaches traditional Japanese Karate with a view to promoting good health, building strong bodies and learning self-respect and determination. By fostering these attributes, our students responsibly learn the devastating unarmed techniques that has made Karate famous.

Chito-Ryu Karate is not a sport as such so there is little emphasis on competition. However many of our members pursue this avenue in a variety of tournaments each year. Chito-Ryu Karate International hosts a Tri-annual Tournament in either Kumomoto, Japan or Vancouver, Canada with over 2,000 competitors entered each time.

Chito-Ryu Lithgow has a junior class for Kindergarten to Year 5 and a Senior class for Year 6 and up. The step by step learning programme we offer makes Karate training suitable for anyone with even the most basic level of fitness.

Lithgow's instructors are Peter McKinnon and Colin Phillips. Peter and Colin are both ranked as Shodan, (1st dan Black Belt). Peter also holds the rank of Joon-Shidoin, a teaching qualification recognised internationally.

Classes are run on Friday evenings, 5.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. for Juniors and 5.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. for Seniors. No special clothing or equipment is needed to start. Beginners or experienced martial artists are welcome!

For further enquiries about Chito-Ryu, please contact Peter McKinnon on (02) 6355 2600 or the Lithgow PCYC.
